Mountains & Beaches was a new tour for the 2015/16 season which has grown out of our years of touring Western Mexico and the enthusiastic recommendations of our guests. Everyone has loved the spectacular mountain scenery and twisty roads of the Sierra Madres and the lovely colonial towns and fascinating historical sites of the heart of old Mexico. But the lure of the Pacific coast—particularly during the northern winter months—and the freedom to explore by motorcycle along the delightful uncrowded beaches and small, relaxed surfer towns, is too strong to resist. This tour puts it all together into a complete vacation package, both adventurous and relaxing.

It all starts on a Saturday when we greet you at the Guadalajara airport and bring you to our home by Lake Chapala. Ajijic’s alluring setting, nestled between the lake and the mountains, combined with its near-perfect year-round climate, has made it a popular North American expatriate community for thousands.

Although our guests are experienced riders, they are often feeling a little rusty when they first arrive. They may also feel uncertain about the new riding conditions and an unfamiliar bike. So the first day we will pick you up at your hotel with your riding gear and take you to meet your fellow riders. We’ll set up each bike with the right seats and settings for every rider and passenger, talk about differences in roads and driving practices, and then take a short and leisurely familiarization ride to neighboring lakeshore towns. At the end of the day we’ll return to Ajijic to enjoy cocktails and dinner at a nearby restaurant.

Our first morning on the road will see us riding through farmland lush with sugar cane, berries, and the beautiful blue agave used to make tequila. After stopping for refreshments at a spectacular restored 17th-century hacienda, we’ll continue the short distance to the archaeological wonder that is Guachimontones, site of the only circular pyramids in the Americas. Our lunch restaurant overlooks a nearby lake, and you can choose from a delicious variety of dishes including frog legs, a traditional local favorite. We’ll skirt the south side of Guadalajara on the ride home, where we’ll enjoy cocktails and dinner once again.

The “beaches” part of the tour will include the convenience of having our support vehicle to carry your luggage. The next morning, after packing for 3 nights and checking out of your hotel, we’ll head through farmland and over curvy mountain roads toward the Pacific coast. Our first destination will be the small beach town of Barra de Navidad, a popular seaside getaway featuring both relaxed and elegant dining choices. We’ll catch an ocean sunset from a beach bar and enjoy margaritas and beer in a casual, relaxed atmosphere. Dinner this evening is at a local restaurant of choice.

The next morning after breakfast, we’ll head north on the coastal highway, where the pavement mirrors the curves of the foothills and coastal lowlands amid groves of coconuts and tropical fruit. We’ll pass through the famous resort towns of Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta to reach the tranquil beach community of Guayabitos. This moderate day of riding will allow ample time for relaxation at our beachfront hotel and maybe a dip in the ocean.

After a leisurely breakfast the following day, we’ll take a restful 50-kilometre ride to the nearby beach town of Punta de Mita. Time will permit those who wish to take a water taxi out to the incredibly exquisite and geologically-unique Marietta Islands for a rare snorkeling experience. Entering the mid-island lagoon through a series of caves is a once-in-a-lifetime experience enjoyable for even the novice snorkeler. Our hotel is nestled among ocean-view restaurants with fabulous food where you simply must try the local specialty, freshly-caught grilled mahi-mahi.

A feast of fabulous riding awaits us the following day as we experience the most mountainous and longest ride of the week. After skirting the edge of Puerto Vallarta, we’ll soon begin climbing into the stunningly magnificent Sierras. The mountain scenery is spectacular and the sweepers and twisties are endless and breathtaking as we climb back up to 5,500’. By now your riding skills and confidence will be at a high level, and mastering this road will be the reward. We’ll enjoy lunch at a rustic and funky roadside restaurant serving authentic Mexican beef and beans accompanied by hand-made tortillas hot off the grill. When we arrive back in Ajijic we’ll return you to your hotel. This evening presents another opportunity for us to dine together or on your own if you so choose.

Our last day includes several highlights. We’ll visit a Magical Town, or “Pueblo Mágico,” the alpine village of Mazamitla, where we’ll enjoy a cappuccino and classic Mexican pastry on the town plaza in the shadow of the village church. Making our way through gentle mountain curves, we’ll head east while marveling at unique panoramic views created by ancient volcanic activity. Following a pleasant lunch, we’ll ride past lush farmland to a lakeside village where we’ll witness a true wonder of nature – the gathering in one place of thousands of Canadian white pelicans who winter in this spot each year. We’ll return to Ajijic in time for cocktails and our farewell dinner.
